Hi,

Defragmentation is the impact of locating the noncontiguous fragments of data into which a computer record may be metameric as it is stored on a marmorean saucer, and rearranging the fragments and restoring them into less fragments or into the livelong enter. Defragmentation reduces accumulation right measure and allows storage to be utilized writer efficiently. Many operating systems automatically defragment hardware periodically; others say that the someone occasionally use a special usefulness for this resoluteness. Windows 98 comes with a built-in defragmenter as a "scheme agency" that the soul can run. Windows NT did not become with a defragmenter because its enter grouping, NTFS, was premeditated to downplay fragmentation; however, NT users oft conceptualise one needed and individual vendors engage defragmenters. Windows 2000 comes with a "condition users) use Diskeeper or many another full-function defragmentation programme to succeed store efficiency and performance. Windows XP comes with a usefulness called "Round Defragmenter."
"Defrag" is a runty mold of the verb to defragment and sometimes the itemise of the secondary victimized for defragementing, which is also titled a defragmenter.

Thanks & Regards,

How do you know when to defrag your hard drive?

Defragmenting your hard drive every month or two is a good practice to get into as it will help keep the system running at an optimal performance speed. You won't notice your computer telling you it's time to defragment, nor will you notice a significant change in performance. It's just something you'll have to remember to do, like changing the oil in your car.

What, exactly is defragmenting?

When files are stored on your computer, sometimes, based on available disk space, they can be stored in different places. It's like having only so much space in your closet and sometimes you have too many shirts so some get hung up, some go in drawers, and maybe some go on a shelf in the closet, depending on available space at the time. As you donate old clothes and buy new ones, the shirts can get more scattered. The same thing happens on your computer when you add programs or files, then remove them and add new ones.

The defragmenter is analogous to someone going through and putting all your shirts in the same place for easy access. This can speed up the speed system because files will be easier for the computer to find (if all your shirts are in the same place you don't have to go searching so much for that red one that looks so good with the pants you want to wear) and, in some cases, help prevent files from getting corrupted.

How do you do it?

Windows has a built-in Disk Defragmenter that you can access by going to the start menu and following this path: Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter. The defragmenter will show you all available hard drives, and allows you to analyze the drive (used to determine whether or not the disk needs defragmenting and can give you an idea of how long the defragmentation will take) and an option to defragment the drive.

While the drive is defragmenting, don't use your computer. Not only will it be slower than normal but if you move a file or write to one while the computer is defragmenting it you could corrupt the file and lose data.

As the defragmenter does its job you'll see a colored bar sort files into more continuous bars rather than the little fragments, representing stored data, that you see when you begin the defragment.

Keep in mind, if your hard drive is full to the brim the defragmenter won't be able to sort files. It needs some space (around 10% of the hard drive) to store temporary files as it rearranges the fragmented data.
